Container Gardening Report

I want to plant some bulbs in a container so I have some pretty flowers in the spring to put on my balcony. I know I have to plant them soon, but I’m pretty clueless about actually getting things to grow. I have grape hyacinths, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils. I live in Maryland, just outside DC. Balcony faces north. I know I’ll have to bring the container in once winter arrives. How often, if at all, do I water and fertilize while it’s inside? How much sun, water, and fertilizer should it get while it’s sitting on my balcony looking like a pot of dirt? How cold can it get before I move it in? How warm does it have to be before I take it back out? What kind of potting medium?

HELP!
Won’t the bulbs rot if they go through too many freeze/thaw cycles?

There is a raised area made of brick about waist-high, approx 2′x5′ on my front porch that is space for plants. Last year I planted annuals, but this year I would like to plant some easy-care perrenials that will look nice throughout the summer. I’m in central IL and it’s a partially shaded area. Does anyone have any suggestions?

i have 2 large pots full of dirt in the front of my house and i need to plant them with something!! only i have no idea what i am doing. i want to plant them with a mixture of plants but don’t know which plants to use. i went to the nursery and my head exploded. thanks for the help.

I was thinking about planting a container (16inch across) and plunking two tomato cages that have been wired together (like a poor mans obelisk) in the middle. I have tried sweet peas this way (bloom period just too short in hot summers here in Detroit) and it worked out well. Any other suggestions? I was thinking about moonflowers, but I’m wondering if they might be too aggressive, top heavy, etc for this set up?
Any ideas?
I’m also thinking about black-eyed susan vine, or morning glories.
What do you guys think?
