I’m brand new to gardening and bought a bunch of outdoor container plants, what should I know?
Friday, October 17th, 2008Here’s what I’ve got and done so far…
A lobelia Hybrid “Luguna compact with blue eye” and a “sunbeam kordana rose” both planted in 8 in terra cotta pots(with drain), on the ground in semi-shade.
A Calibrachoa hybrid “superbells tickled pink” planted in a hanging tin 6 in planter(with drain) hung in direct sun
A mini-spider plant and tiny-fern both in 3 in ceramic pots (no drain) in shade
I planted all 5 plants in Miracle Grow potting soil.
So here’s my questions…
1. would the spider or fern do better indoors? and do they need draining or larger pots?
2. How often should i water each of them? Do any of them need plant food?
3. It’s already fall so will they still be alive this winter? (I’m in SoCal)
4. If they die for the winter (1st 3 say annuals) When will they come back, do i have to do anything to them to make them come back?
5. Please! anything else I should know, I’m really new to this and don’t understand alot of garden-lingo yet,
Thanks!
And did I get good plants for a beginner?
(sorry for all the questions, but I went to Home Depot, it’s like pulling teeth trying to get customer service in that place LOL)
oh and do I have to worry about pests?
Container gardening with vegetables?
Friday, September 19th, 2008What are the best vegetables to use for container gardening?
Thursday, September 18th, 2008I live in an apartment & miss having a garden. I’d like to start a container garden on my patio and grow some vegetables. Which vegetables do best in this type of situation?
Hi, again! Wow, the response I’ve got has been great– could you guys (and gals) please expand on what size containers, how much attention I have to pay to light, etc? Any pertinent details I should know/ keep in mind when endeavoring to do this?
Thanks so much for all the great answers!
How can I start a container garden?
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008I’ve started some seeds in soil cups and they are just now sprouting (I live in CNY).
Is it too late to plant them in a ground? I’ve never started a garden so that’s why I’m thinking of doing containers.
The seeds I have sprouted
onions
cucumbers
tomatoes
pumpkins (i know these have to go into the ground)

Container gardening advice needed?
Saturday, September 6th, 2008I am really interested in starting an herb garden in containers that sit either in the windowsill of the kitchen, by the patio door, or otherwise inside, but I live in east Texas so I can probably take them outside every now and then, some days all year long, or if it got out of control.
I would also like to experiment with some breed of tomatoes that can grow relatively upright and stay confined to it’s container indoors so they don’t sprawl all over the house, drop and stain the carpet, etc.
Is garlic appropriate to grow indoors?
Any pointers for me? My fav herbs are dill, basil, rosemary, and I would love to grow some lavender for homemade bath treats, etc. When I look at the prefab kits, I don’t want them all. If I grew all these things together, would the flavors blend somehow, either from being in close proximity to each other, or from sharing the same soil?
I need allll the advice, details details, no experience. Plants, planting, fert, containers, sun, everything!

Monday, August 25th, 2008Is gardening with tires bad for the environment?
Thursday, August 21st, 2008I have read many articles that suggest using old tires for container gardening. My father is considering making a vegetable garden out of tires. Does the tire pollute the soil and there fore the vegetables? I it is bad to burn tires.. Should I be concerned about the quality of the vegetables? Have you seen any scientific evidence about this topic? Or environmental tests?
