I am interested in having a container garden on my apartment’s small porch this summer. It would be great to grow both vegetables and flowers here,( I live in Kansas, where summers are very hot and windy). What kinds of veggies would do well in pots, and what suggestions do you have for setting it up and maintaining it? I’m new to this, and have to do it “on a shoestring!” Thanks in advance!

I realize it is a wee bit late in the growing season to start anything (I am around San Francisco), but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for decent container-garden vegetables, mainly because I want to make sure things are done as organic as possible. When I lived in New England I did grow pole beans, tomatoes, cukes, peppers, corn, etc., but I have no garden space here so am stuck with containers (I only have some herbs and strawberries at present). Any suggestions for what would grow decently in pots? I’m especially interested in growing tomatoes in a hanging basket, too.

Thanks!

Hope C asked:

All of the books I have read, say that you MUST use certified seed potatoes. Is there any reason I shouldn’t seed out some of the organic fingerling potatoes I already have? I can understand not using regular storebought potatoes, but shouldn’t organic be okay? Same question about sweet potatoes. Any tips or advice will be appreciated!
